Casa
Hogar Santa Teresita
MANO
members, together with parishioners from the Naval Amphibious Base Chapel
in Coronado and other supporters, have provided assistance to Casa Hogar
Santa Teresita Children’s Home in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico.
Casa Hogar is operated by Sisters from the order of the Sisters of the
Sacred Heart. For over 20 years, individuals and often busloads of volunteers
go to Casa Hogar on a regular basis to help with building projects such
as dormitory and classroom expansions, roof repairs, plumbing and kitchen
repairs.
We have provided personal items, clothing and
food for the children, beds, linens, school uniforms, computers, books
and school supplies, medical treatment and other necessities, and provide
much needed financial support to assist with their basic operating expenses.
Members of the Navy Chapel were instrumental in
the building of the beautiful Chapel at Casa Hogar, which was completed
in 2005 in time for the Christmas Mass and party. U. S. supporters often
attend Mass there with the kids. Father Ted Borger, USN was instrumental
in this project, as well as Father Bill Seipp.
We will mention here that in Mexico, the definition
of an orphanage is different from that in the U.S. Although we call Casa
Hogar a Children’s Home, kids are placed there for many reasons:
some are true orphans, some abandoned, some kids have parents that simply
are unable to care for them – with a high percentage of them in
jail. As of August 2007, Casa Hogar is home
to about 60 kids of all ages.
Kids are placed by the government for various
reasons (such as homelessness), but no support is given to assist in their
keep. Casa Hogar and the Madres can do their work only with outside assistance
from friends like you.
Regular visits are made to Casa Hogar; if you
wish to visit give us a call to arrange a time.
